Tiger Army's "Early Years" EP gets a great review from decoy-online
With Tiger Army you get aggressive American Psychobilly -- where a rumbling stand-up bass crashes head-on into haunting melody in an explosion of nocturnal power. Drawing on disparate musical and literary influences from Sun Records in the 1950's to the writing of Edgar Allan Poe, passion and an embrace of darkness both literal and figurative are the common threads running through songwriter, producer and frontman Nick 13. He is aided by longtime friend Geoff Kresge (ex-AFI) on stand-up bass and London May on drums. They are inspired by the fury of punk, the wild energy of 1950's rockabilly and the band's unique take on the underground psychobilly of Europe.
What you hold in your hands is not a "new" Tiger Army release, not exactly anyway. It's actually the first stuff the band ever recorded from 1996 (and a little from early '97). One of the main reasons the recording was so sporadic (with different sessions started and finished in different months and so on) was just getting the cash together to pay for studio hours.
You know when you really dig a band/artist, you want everything they've ever done. If you're like me in this way, then this EP was put out just for you. It may not be literally everything, but trust me, it's everything worth hearing.
All I have to say is pick this up if you dig these guys. I just started getting into them early this year and since I been listening to their unique blend of it all it makes me want to get up go nuts and almost start to swing dance or something. It just has that kind of intensity to it all. So go get this and rock out to Tiger Army.
