Remo Drive Announce New Album 'Natural, Everyday Degradation'
Today Minnesota indie rock band Remo Drive announce new album Natural, Everyday Degradation set to be released on May 31. Remo Drive also share two new songs, “Two Bux” and “The Grind”
Erik Paulson (vocals, guitar) explains, “Two Bux is about coming of age, moral conflict, and guilt. At some point in most people’s lives, they decide they would like to try some of the things their childhood rulebook would not allow. These experiences have the power to be both pleasurable and confusing. More often than not, it is some combination of both.” Listen to “Two Bux” now
On “The Grind” Erik adds, “this song is about the tensions of being in a band written in the style of a love song. Creating music, traveling, and performing are, in their center, nearly identical to the things that make romantic, familial, and platonic relationships so impactful. The aforementioned experiences are also the same things that make these relationships so difficult. It felt natural and cathartic to tie these ideas together by way of a song.” Listen to "The Grind" now
Brothers Erik and Stephen Paulson toured the world on the heels of their 2017 release Greatest Hits and 2018’s Pop Music EP. All that time spent on toll roads and tarmacs left the brothers with endless opportunities to think about how far their band had come in a short time – as well as plan for the future. While Greatest Hits overflowed with wide-eyed nativity and whole-hearted enthusiasm, Natural, Everyday Degradation finds the Paulson brothers crafting a sturdier brand of indie-rock.
Produced by Joe Reinhart (Modern Baseball, Hop Along) and mixed by Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), Natural, Everyday Degradation highlights the band’s true strengths. Erik’s lyrics are emotionally resonant and universally relatable, though, they’re far more intentional and precise this time around. Instead of letting off-kilter turns of phrase and nervous energy capture listeners’ ears, Remo Drive allow their confidence to take center stage.
“None of the songs are that wild,” Erik demures, noting the album’s title was in part inspired by Salvador Dalí’s iconic painting “The Persistence of Memory.” Perhaps that’s true, but while Remo Drive circa Greatest Hits found the band looking longingly beyond their suburban Minnesota hometown, Natural, Everyday Degradation is them on the other side, soundtracking the long drives and relentless touring with life’s bigger questions.
