The Nekromantix: Return of the Loving Dead
Hellcat Records
8 out of 10
2002
Psychobilly's major emergence is on the horizon. Soon, all these kids wearing Blink 182 shirts will be wearing Reverend Horton Heat, X, The Mescaleros, The Blasters, Hank Williams III, Lee Rocker, Russell Scott and King Bees, The Bandits (the locals), Tiger Army, and even Nekromantix gear. This genre has been kicking for a while now, but has just started to gain major popularity and The Nekromantix are sure to be one of the main bands on the front line of the Psychobilly invasion.
These Danish greasers know how to rock, and do it with style. From custom coffin style stand up basses, to the traditional greased up pompadour, these guys fit the part of a rebel rockabilly. But, all visual judgments aside, these guys can really play. The Nekromantix are comprised of Kim Nekroman on vocals and the coffin bass, and the Sandorff brothers, Kristian on drums, and Peter on guitar and backing vocals. The Nekromantix stream spontaneously from full out punk to just plain rockabilly fitting snugly in the psychobilly genre. Their style is heavy in the horror section, lyrical components comparable to bands like AFI and the Misfits with songs like "Who Killed The Cheerleader", "Nice Day For A Resurrection", "Gargoyles Over Copenhagen" and "Murder for Breakfast". This was the perfect CD to be listening to over Halloween.
Return of the Loving Dead is the Nekromantix' sixth album, but first record on Hellcat, and also their first major US debut. Their philosophy on their whole music careers can be summed up by this quote by Nekroman, "We're kind of going back to the roots, just being teenagers again and not thinking too much about what we're doing. I'm not taking myself so serious, life or death, or anything, because it's all about having a good time." This obviously reflects their sound, because it's just a fun album with songs about their favorite holiday (Halloween), to a soon to be rockabilly classic, "I'm a Hellcat." This one's got it all, its fast, spooky, funny, original, and just sounds great.
