Punk rock veterans and THE quintessential Warped band, Bad Religion, are back for their fifth time on the traveling festival. Playing songs from their revered catalogue including the 2007 release New Maps Of Hell, Bad Religion are one of southern California's most beloved punk rock bands of the last three decades. www.myspace.com/badreligion

ESCAPE THE FATE (Entire Tour – Hurley Stage)
The band is single handedly bring the bare-knuckle swagger back to a stale rock scene. www.myspace.com/escapethefate

SING IT LOUD (Entire Tour – Hurley Stage)
Teenagers across the country are buzzing about pop-rock's shining new stars, Sing It Loud, since the release of their debut album, Come Around, in 2008. The MTVU "Freshman 5" band recently partnered up with the charity To Write Love On Her Arms, to raise awareness regarding the treatment and prevention of depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide on the tour. www.myspace.com/singitloud

WESTBOUND TRAIN (Entire Tour – Hurley Stage)
Boston's soul/ska septet Westbound Train meld the best of soul, reggae and ska seamlessly on the band's recently released album, Come and Get It. Shattering musical boundaries while embracing the best of several genres, the new album invites listeners on a journey, traveling through all of the band's previous influences while creating an exciting new sound that they are eager to reveal to Warped fans across the country. www.myspace.com/westboundtrain

I SET MY FRIENDS ON FIRE (Entire Tour – Hurley.com Stage)
Consisting of Matt (Vocals) and Nabil (Instruments/Programming/Vocals), ISMFOF defy conventional genres by cross-breeding electronica with elements of grind and hardcore for one of the freshest sounds around. The band's debut album, You Can't Spell Slaughter Without Laughter, melds the band's unique sense of humor with an onslaught of thrash angular guitar riffs, pulsing dance beats, brutal breakdowns, sassy screams and lush melodic choruses. www.myspace.com/isetmyfriendsonfire

CIVET (June 26-July 3 – Kevin Says Stage)
On a male dominated tour like Warped, the brash and tattooed ladies of Civet have no problem holding their own. Fresh off of a run with Dropkick Murphys and tour with Social Distortion planned for this fall, this tough-as-nails femme fatale punk rock band will blow Warped attendees away this summer as they shred cuts from their latest album, Hell Hath No Fury. www.myspace.com/civet

THE BLACKOUT (June 26-July 19 – Kevin Says Stage)
The Welsh six-piece will take the US by storm with the recent release of their new album, The Best In Town; a potent brew of massive rock riffs, soaring melodies and maniacal screams. Having honed their skills touring across Europe Japan and the US alongside bands like Bless the Fall, Alesana, The Used and Pierce the Veil, the Blackout were nominated by Kerrang! as Best British Newcomers. The Blackout's tremendous songwriting and crushing abilities remind listeners that the band isn't boasting when they call it The Best In Town, they're just stating a fact. www.myspace.com/theblackout

You Me At Six's revival of fun-loving, care-free, spirited pop-rock is infectious and spreads with each listen. Fans fall fast for both the band's teen-relevant lyrics of heartache, bad breakups, and jealousy, and the non-stop rockfest of single-worthy sing-alongs like "Gossip," "Save It For The Bedroom," "Take Off Your Colours," "If I Were In Your Shoes" and "Finders Keepers." Fall in love with your new favorite band this summer! www.myspace.com/youmeatsix

LEFT ALONE (June 26-June 27 – Kevin Says Stage)
Combining three-chord punk rock with ska and just a dash of country to create a unique sound all their own, Left Alone has used their DIY ethos to move up the ranks from backyard band to Hellcat Records staple on their recently released self-titled sophomore album. www.myspace.com/leftalonepunx

ORANGE (June 26-June 27 – Kevin Says Stage)
Los Angeles based punk rock group Orange have risen out their own ashes to triumphantly produce their best album to date, Phoenix, which is due out in September. On the verge of splitting up the band decided to continue marching forward doing what they love and do best... rocking out. Catch the band this summer for an early taste of the new album. www.myspace.com/orange
Bad Religion Interview at Rollingstone.com

Bad Religion"s Brett Gurewitz: "I Think The Music Industry Is About to Enter A Golden Age"

Brett Gurewitz holds a new CD in his hands, an advance copy of an expanded edition of last year"s New Maps of Hell. He opens it up and proudly points to a live DVD, lyrics, panaramic photos, posters and other fine extras, all set for release in July. It"s an example of added value aimed at the new generations of music lovers for whom the "silver circles" of CDs have lost their luster as rock"s holy object. Gurewitz is the founding guitarist of Bad Religion, a band of veteran Los Angeles punks, but he"s also a record company man, the founder of influential indie Epitaph Records, which helped launch the careers of Rancid, the Offspring, Pennywise and many others. He says the label is still going strong in the era of collapsing record sales, and as he sits with Bad Religion singer Greg Graffin, he feels just fine.

You"re re-releasing New Maps of Hell?

Brett Gurewitz: I always wanted to try this. The reason was to try and give something extra. The band"s had lots and lots of records, so it becomes a little harder to make each one special. I think this is number 17 for us. We made the record, we"re proud of it, we said "Hey, let"s do all this stuff and reissue it."

Greg Graffin: It is easy to joke and be cynical about how people aren"t buying CDs anymore. My son is 16 years old, and in all honesty, he and his friends love having the actual piece of merchandise. And when something has this much content on it, it makes them salivate. Maybe it"s harder for record companies to release product without adding some bells and whistles, but it really is a nice product in the end.

There are other Bad Religion albums that fans might want to see get this kind of treatment.

Gurewitz: We did on this one because it was to create some value in a CD. Music is so widely available now " even though Greg says his son loves CDs, I"ve found that most kids I know don"t want a CD even if you give it to them for free. They love the music, but they just want to get it on their iPod. They don"t care much for silver circles. Really what it"s about is: here is the CD, but here"s some really nice artistic content you can have. It"s not just a cheap piece of plastic. There"s some posters, you got all the lyrics, you"ve got a DVD which is beautifully shot with seven cameras of the set we did when first releasing the album. It"s a new paradigm. I don"t know exactly what"s happening with the music industry, but it may be that the album format itself is dying, or maybe that the album format isn"t dying but the CD is dying with nothing to replace it yet.

Graffin: Nobody has done the research. Nobody has asked kids: What would you rather have? It"s easy to speculate, but if you don"t make the records, and you don"t market the records, guess what? They don"t sell. Whereas if they"re available for free as a download, kids will take them.

You seem strangely not worried about this.

Gurewitz: I"m not worried in the slightest. I think the music industry is about to enter into a golden age. It"s wonderful. I don"t think record companies need to sell CDs. Major labels need something cheap that they can sell bulk of, or they"re going to go under. Small companies like myself, that kind of evolved to be the cockroaches in the music industry, to survive on meager sustenance? We"re going to be fine. We"re the ones who will be left when the whole thing craters. Music consumption is up. It"s CD sales that are down. Record stores are going out of business. I"m not concerned because I"m a huge music fan, and I see the explosion of genres and artists and records and tracks and new concepts and mashups is so fascinating and wonderful and kaleidoscopic. In my truck, I can listen to Yeasayer, the Fuck Buttons, Santogold, Ozzy Osbourne and the Cool Kids, and the teenage kids in my truck think it"s all cool. What"s happening is going to be a renaissance.

Graffin: We both agree on that. Brett loves technology, but when you find him on an airplane, he"s reading a book. There"s an aesthetic quality to books that he prefers. I"m not saying my kids have the aesthetic connection with the CD itself, but maybe the artwork, the words that are printed, have a intangible quality to them that kids prefer.

Gurewitz: Virgin Records did an interesting study where they brought in a bunch of kids for a focus group. They had them listen to music: What song do you like better? Which song is catchier? Thanks you very much for giving us three hours, and as a reward, you can have any of our new CDs, and they didn"t want any of them.

Graffin: They probably weren"t cool. There probably weren"t any bands that matter to those kids.

Don"t the hardcore fans of Bad Religion want to own the album as an artifact?

Gurewitz: The hardcore fans do. Kids don"t want CDs, man. They want MP3s. I know " I own a record business. I don"t think it bodes ill for bands. Those kids will still come to shows. They"ll still buy some kind of an artifact. I know kids with whole record collections, and they don"t own any records; they just have drives full of music. These are 16 year old kids. My kid doesn"t have a single CD, not one.
BAD RELIGION CHARTS NEW TERRITORY ON DELUXE VERSION OF NEW MAPS OF HELL

Punk Veteran's First-Ever Deluxe Release Hits Stores July 8th

The revered punk band Bad Religion is set to reissue last year's acclaimed New Maps of Hell with expanded features and bonus material on July 8th. Lifelong dissenters and noted critics of the current administration (2004's The Empire Strikes First was a direct critique of Bush's pre-emptive policy), the band's 15th release ironically, but coincidentally, comes out just days after the 4th of July.

The deluxe version of New Maps of Hell includes the original 16 song CD, along with seven new acoustic tracks recorded by principal songwriters Greg Graffin (vocals) and Brett Gurewitz (guitars). Three of the acoustic songs are new, written specifically for this release; the other four tracks are new acoustic versions of Bad Religion classics such as 2004's hit song "Sorrow" and the perennial favorite "Skyscraper." Graffin and Gurewitz formed the idea of recording the EP to illustrate how they write songs: generally writing a song on just an acoustic guitar or piano, and then crafting it into the electrified scorchers they ultimately become later with the band.

Additionally, the release includes a DVD with an hour-long live performance that has never been seen before, along with music videos for NMOH's two singles "Honest Goodbye" and "New Dark Ages," behind-the-scenes footage of Brett and Greg during the recording of the acoustic EP and more.

The all-new packaging pays homage to the band's hometown of Los Angeles, but unmasks the city with a gritty reality not usually associated with Tinseltown. Shot in the striking format of high dynamic range photography by local fine arts photographer Dave Bollock, the deluxe release also features a booklet of Bollock's work entitled "New Maps of Hell - City of Angels" and classic Bad Religion posters.

Voted THE "Old School Band who Still Rock" by Alternative Press readers, Bad Religion are giving back to the fans who have supported them in their over two-decade long career with New Maps of Hell deluxe edition.

Greg Graffin to Be Honored for Lifetime Achievement in Atheism, Punk Rock, and Science

Bad Religion's Greg Graffin to Be Honored for Lifetime Achievement in Atheism, Punk Rock, and Science

"Cultural Humanism" Awardee is Seminal Punk Singer, Earned Ivy-League PhD in Evolution

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Harvard University's prominent community of atheists and agnostics is poised to honor a rock star and scientist whom they argue is an ideal role model for the nation's millions of non-religious youth.

The Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard has gained considerable national attention in the past year for its unique approach to building a culture and community for the non-religious, and this April 26 it will give its highest honor, the "Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism," to a unique figure: Dr. Greg Graffin, frontman of the influential punk rock band Bad Religion. Graffin, whose "day job" since 1980 has been recording and extensive worldwide touring with a band boasting such hits as "How Could Hell be Any Worse" and "American Jesus," earned his PhD in Zoology at Cornell and is a member of the UCLA's Faculty in Biology, teaching Life Sciences courses covering Darwin and natural selection. Graffin will give an acoustic performance after accepting the award.

"I always put education high on my list of priorities because I thought, Wouldn't it be neat if you can have a singer of your favorite band who also has something more to offer than looking cool - which I don't - or dressing cool - which I don't;" Graffin said. "Those are the things that I try to inspire young people to do, whether it is in the lecture hall or on stage on the Warped Tour."

But Bad Religion, considered among the most influential modern punk bands, has been known for inspiring young people towards a particular set of ideas: those of atheism and Humanism. Graffin's lyrics make plain his passionate disbelief in God. Yet the Harvard Humanists cite his faith in the ability of music and science to improve the world as making the singer unique.

"Graffin is proof positive that atheists can be great ethical role models: young people idolize rock stars, and what more could you want from one than his lifelong dedication to science, education, and Humanism?" said Greg Epstein, Humanist Chaplain of Harvard University.

The award, intended to honor a Humanist or atheist having made a lasting impact on US culture, was presented last year to renowned novelist Sir Salman Rushdie before a sold-out audience of 1100 that Rushdie likened to a celebration of "Atheistmas," and will once again be conferred at Harvard's Memorial Church, the official University Chapel. Graffin was selected for this year's award by the Harvard Secular Society, an undergraduate student group affiliated with the Humanist Chaplaincy. The event is co-sponsored by Newbury Comics, Harvard Book Store, & the Cambridge Forum.
