Division Of Laura Lee
"Black City" is a smart, intense, darkly-tinged, atmospheric, and daringly experimental rock 'n' roll record. It is the sound of a group emboldened by their influences and unafraid of striking out in all directions at once. Critics have compared Black City to recordings by such disparate rock luminaries as The Stooges, Joy Division, Girls Against Boys, and My Bloody Valentine but the one thing upon which seemingly all can agree is the freshness and cohesion of the record itself. From the bone rattling simplicity of the albums opener "Need To Get Some", to the swirling and plaintive strains of the highly original "The Truth is Fucked" or the haunting "I Walk On Broken Glass", Black City delivers something that never fails to transcend definition or attract attention... Excellence.

are one of the most important bands in the history of rock. And he has a plan for world
domination that begins with everyone in America picking up a copy of the group's grainy growling disc Black City, set for release this August on Burning Heart/Epitaph. And with his old labelmates the Hives leading this new Swedish resurgence, Gustafsson could be more on the money than even he dared to imagine. Just listen.
Key tracks: 'The Truth Is F**ked', 'We've Been Planning This For Years'
Now this is just getting embarrassing. No sooner has the UK woken up to the fact that Swedish bands like The Hives and The (International) Noise Conspiracy are putting our homegrown acts to shame when it comes to banging out punk rock with soul, heart and balls, then along come Division Of Laura Lee to rub salt into the wounds.
'Black City' is a tremendous album. Its 12 tightly-wound, retro-punk tracks mix the brooding sensuality of Girls Against Boys with the dark atmospherics of Joy Division and the hip-shaking drive of latter-day Primal Scream. Throw in cool lyrics like ''I'm not your toy for penetration" and smartly subversive titles such as 'The Truth Is F**ked' and 'We've Been Planning This For Years', and - to borrow a phrase from The Hives - DOLL could well prove to be your new favourite band.
