After seven years of building a mountainous repertoire of transcendental boogie swagger, Zen Guerrilla has finally documented the funk tumult and psycho blues hammering unleashed in its famed live shows. These art-rock freaks could easily be merely overamplified, distorted and groove-laden, but their songs' capacity to preserve distinct highs, lows and a rush of the spirit--albeit a somewhat chemically sodden rush--saves them. Buried in the punk furor and lysergic intensity is an evangelical strain of pure soul music that outshines most of the would-be preacher men huckstering on the indie-rock revival circuit. Zen Guerrilla preaches a more genuine gospel than those delivered unto hipsters by the likes of Jon Spencer and the Make-Up. To Zen Guerrilla's faithful, visions abound. Was that God in your face or just one more life-affirming beer? Trance States in Tongues is fraught with such religious ecstasies.

Zen Guerrilla - Trance States In Tongues
Following their increasing popularity and success Zen Guerrilla have re-released their fourth album 'Trance States In Tongues'. After being hailed by the likes of Kerrang, NME and even The Independent as a truly great band it looks as if Zen Guerrilla are more than ready to take on the likes of The Strokes and The White Stripes and win convincingly
The band was formed way back in 1991 when the members were at university and their early material was more an experimentation than a solid musical project. They have since evolved into a band that has become one of the most compelling live acts around.
The music itself is heady brew of old-fashioned rock and roll, soul, blues and a little bit of country and punk. It might sound like a strange combination but when mixed together with the energy and passion that these guys have for their music it ensures that the CD is an action packed 40 minutes.
Marcus Durant, who has a voice, which can stretch between a howling gravely scream and soaring melodies, provides the vocal talent. A formidable rhythm section pound out the huge beats that dominate most of the tracks and it is not difficult to imagine the huge wall of sound that they put out live.
Well known for their exciting live shows Zen Guerrilla look set to go from strength to strength this year on the back of the current climate of old fashioned American rock and roll bands.
