We recorded this at Westbeach recorders in '89 once again with Brett Gurewitz. This record took 6 days to record and mix. We had a blast recording this time cuz we had 6 whole days. We didn't know how to sing harmonies yet, so Greg Graffin of Bad Religion came in and sang the back-ups on 3 or 4 songs. That was ultra cool. Too bad we couldn't pull them off live. This was our first record to come out after Suffer (the record that changed everything) and the first record to come out on Epitaph. It sold 3500 copies the first year and that was a lot more than our previous one. Flipside fanzine called us metal and that was a total bummer. I think it was because Steve had long hair and a metal guitar. Oh well they're forgiven.

As an appropriate indicator of things to come, a luscious dominatrix straddling a plane graced the cover of NOFX's first full-length release on Epitaph records. This record shows a very important transition for the band: this is the first time their songs are actually good (a novel concept, eh?). The music had finally graduated from thrash-core to melodic hardcore... well, sort of. At this point, the band wasn't too melodic, and apparently Fat Mike can't stand to listen to his vocals on this record. I don't see why though, for the whiny, slightly out-of-tune vocals add the perfectly snotty touch that the band has always been known and loved for. Musically on S&M, NOFX shifted from standard double-time punk riffs to more complex soloing, to the point that Flipside actually called them a metal band. Rest assured, this ain't no fuckin' metal -- this is just truly excellent punk rock with some talent thrown in for a change. "S&M Airlines" and "Day to Daze" are indicators of how the majority of the album is fast paced, intricate but not overdone, and catchy as hell. NOFX also set the standard for their remarkable sense of humor with hilarious tracks like "You Drink You Drive You Spill", taking a different approach to drinking and driving with witty lyrics such as "Another bumpy road is so much wasted booze / I'm not so worried about how many I kill / I much more concerned with how much beer I spill". "Jaundiced Eye", on the other hand, displayed the band's serious side, providing a powerful track that ridicules the concept of racism way before it was P.C. to do so. To round it all off, Fat Mike and Bad Religion's own Greg Graffin join up for a really entertaining duet covering Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way". For some reason, this album isn't as popular as some of their later stuff, but I think it's absolutely great. Anyone who appreciates anything the band has done should really enjoy this record.

yes,that's it...fat mike's terrible voice makes thsi cd to a masterpiece though it's a bit metal...but,for sure,it's PUNK !!!
